foggy sunrise - c&c welcome,

The fog so quickly passed that I didn't have time to go looking for a better composition. As soon as I snapped this, the sun came out of the fog. So, I keep looking at it, I've cropped it a couple different ways, is the composition ok, or distracting? (I can't decide, which probably means it's distracting!)

I love the metallic skies you get on foggy mornings, I can't seem to capture them well with the camera though:cry....

I think you're right about the composition, I'm not sure what the subject is headscratch.gif

Maybe a potrait crop so you just leave the 2 conifers would help ne_nau.gif

Tessa, the surreal quality of light and fog here is amazing. Unfortunately, the trees in the foreground on the sides not only distract from the light but are the sharpest subjects in the frame.

I agree that a tighter portrait orientation could help the composition, especially if you crop out the remaining bits of the two side trees. If you want to keep working with this photo, you could enhance the light considerably by post-processing in the Lab color space and perhaps then add a blurred layer to give the whole shot a soft-focus effect. If you have a chance to go back, however, I think it would be better to shoot again during the golden light of sunrise or sunset and see how you might be able to reframe the composition with fewer distractions and more focus on the beautiful quality of light. The scene is definitely worthy of further exploration!

    Tessa

    I like this-

crop as much as you can of the side trees and clone out the rest (the branches, that is)-

    Here's some rework...
I appreciate your input. Though I'm embarrassed to say I don't understand what you mean by LAB color space (I use Elements 4.0), I cropped this to square and adjusted contrast. I guess too I wasn't sure what you meant by a blurring layer. What do you think of this rework? Thanks...

I like this crop much better.thumb.gif I think cropping even more off the top would also help the composition.

Sorry about the obscure Photoshop references. I don't know Elements 4.0 or what's available there for color and highlights enhancement. If you have a Shadow/Highlights menu or a Curves or Levels menu, you could bring out the various colors of the sky even more than by adjusting contrast.

I'm interested in what you might do to this scene if you were painting it. Would you change anything about the framing and colors?

    I don't know elements-

but pick on one of the icons at the bottom of the layers box that gives you a duplicate layer-

do a gaussian blur at radius of 10.0 to 20.0 pixels, and click ok-

at the top of the layers box there is a slider for opacity that you can move to adjust the amount of blur-slide to taste--

I'm groping in the dark here-don't know if you have this kind of set up or not-need someone who knows elements-

    that's an interesting question,
how astute of you to ask! You got me thinking. If this were a painting, I'd redesign the trees slightly. There's already kind of an 's' curve to the one on the right. I might enhance that, make the other one complement it, then place the sun so that it flows with the curve. As far as colors, I suppose they could be a little more intense, yet part of me doesn't mind the softness to it. I wish I could reshoot this, but the conditions were just 'so' on that morning and we haven't had one since. Within a couple minutes this scene had disappeared. I wish I could more with this, but maybe it's just :deadhorse

can't you hear the trees now, as the movie drones on, "Hey, Firby, what's the name of this crap?"
"You know what it is, you pineknot, it's 'A Walk to Remember'"
"Oh, I thought it was 'A Movie to Forget'"
