I arrived home this morning at 1 AM after driving 1100 miles on Saturday. Nightinale and I had coffee with the guys as they were getting ready to shoot Merritt Island Wildlife Preserve Saturday morning before we left for Indiana.

So I am sleep deprived, but I wanted to see if I captured anything worthwhile last week, and the posted shots I have seen from the other attendees are of a very high quality.

I have only scratched the surface, but here are a couple of frames from the first few days of the week shot with a 1DMkll. So take that Nikonians!!

I want to thank Harry and his lovely wife Linda for all the time and effort they put into making this trip such a wonderful experience.:clap :clap Nightingale and I will long remember this lovely week in Florida.:thumb

I hope you salvage some of your images - I suspect a glitch in your hard drive storage device.

    Hey PF,

Glad you guys got home safely. You made pretty good time for a guy who drives like an old lady. :lol

Outstanding shots and a really good gallery also.

I had a great time on the shoot. I see those birds every day but it was very special to meet fine folks like yourself and Nightingale.

Thanks, everyone jwear, Birdman ( you from Alcatraz perhaps?), BIgAl, Harry, TML, Ed Hughes, mereimage, Rohirrim, Mike, Ginger - all of you. Glad you enjoyed the pictures:):

These were shot and processed in ARC and Photoshop, using the Lab portrait workflow dscussed in the portrait thread of Chapter 14 of the Canyon Conundrum. You can thank rutt for that too. I certainly do.

The blurred shot of the egrets you asked about, Ginger, was one of those lovely accidents we all experience some time. The light was too dark and my shutter speed was only 1/160 for a 700mm lens and obviously the image was blurred due to subject and camera movement. But it caught my eye as I was culling shots, and the one bird in the center right seemed to draw me in, and so I processed it basically as I did the rest of them. I am glad you liked it - I do too - I don't usually favor blurred images, but this one seems to depict what I saw in that ditch in the early morning light.

Here's a spoonbill in that same early light
    56160947-L.jpg

And here is a hawk I have a whole series of and plan to post a little later
    56290775-L.jpg

I am hoping that the Nikonians on this thread will make me an honorary Nikonian even though these were shot with white lenses:D

I was sure that you would recognize that hawk, Harry. I am waiting to see your shots of it also. That is the closest a hawk has ever allowed me to approach.

I liked the water drops at the bill of the spoonbill and the early morning light. They are strange looking birds, with the beaks always in the water.

To have been accepted as an honorary Nikonian is a humbling experience. I will try to uphold the standards of being an honorary Nikonian, and will see if I can find some black tape for my lenses.:Drolleyes1.gif

Hey I remember that hawk. Great shots Jim. I have been waiting to see your shots of the hawk and it was well work the wait. He showed up again Monday morning and let us approach him but the sun was still rising and he flew off a couple minutes before the morning light would have lit him wonderfully. He cried out at us just before he flew off in defiance of the coming light. Your spoonbill is also excellent. I haven't gotten to mine yet but I know they were not in that nice of light.

Thanks Harry - I just got a kick out of the it, with the beak wide open and the green lore so prominent.

I looked at the shots posted on the dark side at Nikon cafe, and am very impressed. There are some outstanding shots there.
Kevin has a fine eye for lighting and detail. I did not recognize all the screen names, but the images were luscious.
Makes me very proud to be an honorary Nikonian. Now if Canon would just introduce a wireless remote for their cameras. I can't believe they missed that opportunity. Wired remotes are SO yesterday!!

    Hey PF,

Those folks are such fine shooters. I am always humbled when I view their shots. Kevin, Frank (Flew), Mike (mikemac), and Jim Fenton (who couldn't make it down to this year's shoot) are some of the finest shooters I have met.

I'm so glad you liked that shot Erich.iloveyou.gif I looked at your gallery also. You have some lovely work in there too!! Other folks shoud take a gander at your galleries also. Quite creative http://www.hbimaging.com/

I wasn't sure how well my GBH reflection would appeal to folks - it almost looks like a brushed art style from PS, but it is basically a straight photo that has had a little enhancement with curves and saturation and a gradient or two.

Thank you!! I appreciate the nice comments very much.

I know some folks really don't like saturated colors but I think it really works in certain images and this one is one of them.

    Again, very impressive.
