So this week I got to go to the middle of the American desert (Ft. Irwin - an hour from Barstow, CA) and watch C-17s land in the dirt and offload Army personnel and equipment. I'm in the process of uploading a bunch of the shots to my gallery right now - http://photos.mikelanestudios.com/gallery/1200536.

Here are a couple of my favorite shots from those that have uploaded so far:

There'll be plenty of them up in my gallery soon. They're uploading right now. Plus I've got more waiting to be fixed up and posted. Let me know if you like them.

Thanks bro. It's quite a site to see them takeoff especially in the dirt. One did a touch and go at night because he had trouble seeing the IR lights and flew right over our heads at maybe 200 feet. That was awesome.

I'm thinking about turning the 2nd one or another one with a similar crop into a poster with borders and some fancy lettering and such. I think there would be a bunch of guys that would like framed versions of that.

clap.gif Mike, both are great. I like how the flare leads the eye to the action on the ground. I really enjoy this kind of stuff, and these two shots are excellent.

Wonderful shots. Are/were you in the military? I have been waiting to get some shots of the C-130s here at Pope, but just been too busy.

I'm currently a Capt. Navigator type (KC-135) working as an AMLO at the I Corps in Ft. Lewis, WA. You?

Not to over analyze things, but since I'm a pilot I'm allowed to! :D Technically it isn't a touch and go unless they actually touch down. What you are referring to is actually a go-around. Also, what do you mean when you say "IR Lights"? I'm actually curious here. Do you mean the Approach Lights? (PAPI's, or VASI)

Ok, lol, I'm done! Sorry bout that! :D Great shots though! That has always been one of my favorite planes. I'd love to be able to get some close up shots of one like that!

    Thanks!

I'm actually a navigator (an Evaluator Navigator to be precise), so I'm quite familiar thumb.gif They actually did touch down (thus my terminology: touch and go). When you have an 85000 lb load sometimes it's difficult to stop your momentum.

This was a dirt field at night. There were no lights other than IR (Infrared) chem lights at strategic points on the field. No PAPI, no VASI, no taxiway lighting, no centerline lights, no navaids, nothing. Just 4 IR chemlights and an IR strobe. The pilots were on NVGs.

    What do you fly?

Wow Mike....... I saw that first shot and I thought ohhh no the planes crash landed on the run way.....it's just the way those clouds are and the way the plane is sitting.

What a great job you must have......just amazing.....good for you Mike clap.gif

C-17s don't have engineers. He may be a loadmaster though.
