Question: EXIF info (like date taken, for example)

Hi all,

I don't know if this has been asked before.

My question is... Is there a way to show the date a particular photo was taken (this information is in the EXIF data)?

Of course, I mean to show the "date taken", but:

- Without having to enter it manually as part of the photo caption
- Without having to click on the "more details: exif" link

I don't know if it's allowed to talk about the competition, but I'm talking about something like in pbase.com, where you see in the main page the date taken and some basic exif information.

Regards,
xvrbx

wave.gif you can talk about any companies you like here! We love it when you tell us what's important.

Presently, you have to click on the exif link.
You can, though, show your photos by timeline:

    http://www.smugmug.com/help/timeline

    http://andydemo.smugmug.com/date/

I'm guessing that one of our javascripters could figure out a way to extract the date taken from the exif link, and display it in the caption area... I'll also suggest that perhaps "date taken" could be added to the exif list on the critique style: http://andydemo.smugmug.com/gallery/1102707

Well, now that you say it... Here are my personal opinion about "critique" style:

    - "date taken" to me it's more important than "file size"
    - "colorspace" maybe it's not so imporant, most browsers are able to show properly only sRGB (in fact most people convert files to sRGB to post them on the web)
    - "exposure time" seems not to be correct (look at http://xvrbx.smugmug.com/gallery/1204465/3/56363690 in "critique" style and compare with http://www.pbase.com/xvrbx/image/41256263/original, for example)
    - same thing with "focal length" (see same urls as above)

About these 2 last points, I must say that maybe it's something specific of the Digital Rebel, because photos taken by me with the 20D don't show this problem (information is accurate). However, it seems that the EXIF extractor used by the pbase.com folks is able to handle correctly both cameras.

Ideally I'd like to have something similar that I had in pbase.com (besides the caption, to have the extacted "date taken" and basic exif information).

    Regards,
    xvrbx

Actually, you'll have date taken and date modified on critique mode soon enough. Standby, it's just a minor thing.

I don't know who is JT, but I can assure he's fast :)

I'm thinking about the complexity of getting the exif data programmatically using JavaScript... In principle it seems doable... I don't have a lot of recent experience with JavaScript, but i think it could be possible to programmatically retrieve the HTML page of the EXIF data, parse it, and extract the desired information. Once this is done, it's a matter of putting this information in the innerHTML of the desired object.

Hey, JavaScripters, do you think what I say is doable or is it complete nosense?

But - you have it *now* on your site if you want it -- view style --> critique

    Just making sure you know...

I saw it, but ideally I'd prefer a style more like the "traditional" with basic exif information and date taken. Even more ideally, with an independent id/class to be able to selectively disable it via CSS :)

    Next/Prev picture preview/popup
Is there any way to remove/disable the next/prev picture pop-up feature?

Ok... I have still a lot to learn about how to customize a gallery, and I admit there are things that I preferred the way they looked in pbase.com. For this reason, I haven't decided yet whether I'll continue using pbase or move to smugmug.

But in any case, I can honestly say that I'm amazed about the resposiveness of the smugmug staff, and their willingness to improve things in this site.

For this reason, I've decided to continue with you and pay at least 1 year of "power" subscription. This is independent of my decision (not taken yet) on where to put the photos. You have earned you money :)

Simply, I wanted to put here publicly my admiration and respect for the people that run this site, and make it extensive to the whole community of the smug muggers :)

Thanks, for the moment I'm playing locally with Firefox "Display Element Information" and "Edit CSS" :)
