Fade to black&white?

Does anyone have a method in either PSP or CS2 to get a color image to gradually fade to b&w? It's a pic for biz cards and the left minor portion of the card needs to stay color while gradually transitioning to b&w towards the right! Help! I'm pretty stumped on this one! Thanks very much!

    Sure!

In CS2 you want to use a gradient mask.
    • Copy your image onto a new layer
    • Convert the new layer to black and white using your method of choice
    • Add a layer mask to your new layer (Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All)
    • Press G to select the gradient tool. In the option bar for the gradient tool (probably at the top of your screen) open up the gradient picker. Select the Black,White gradient. Also in the option bar make sure you have linear gradient selected.
    • With the gradient tool, click+drag from left to right across your image. When you release the mouse button you should get your fade from color into black & white.

Make a Hue/Saturation layer (desature there) above yuor image layer, add mask and use gradient tool.

I must be missing something simple. I've got the new b&w layer, created the new layer mask and used the gradient tool to create a nice fade on the b&w layer. However at this point all I have is a faded b&w layer with no color showing thru? I've tried merging the layers at this point and just about everything else but all I'm left with is a b&w image with a fade, i.e. no fade to color. Is there something else I should be doing with the layer mask? Any opacity I should have (it's set to 50% on the mask)? Thanks again for any help!

Yes, I think so. There is no need muck about with opacity. Are you sure have a gradient in the layer mask of the BW layer? There should only be two layers, one color and one BW. The mask is not a separate layer. Try to post a screen shot of your layers palette. That should give us a clue to the problem.

    Cheers,

    Cheers,

That's what I figured...I haven't played with the opacity much since it seemed a stretch. Here's a screenshot of the palette. I definitely selected the mask and the right layer. Then I lay down the gradient and nothing happens. If I select the B&W image in the layer with the mask and apply the gradient I get the fade but there is still no color. I appreciate the help!

The steps are: select the BW layer. Click on the mask icon in the layer. Select the gradient tool. Draw the gradient line on the pic. You should then see a black to white gradient in the mask icon on the BW layer. There does not appear to be any mask gradient in your screen shot.
