Thank you Andy. I agree with you that it's technically weak. I'll file it as a raw concept, and keep it in the back of my mind to find a more effective way to execute it.
    OMG the irony!

I didn't like the pic, but I don't think it was out of bounds. It's just the blurred bullet and the goofy look... Gah! It was so cheesy! Ruined the entire thing for me. I think it would suffice to show a lot less so the viewer can read between the lines. The challenge #40 winner does that very well. Its what you can't see that makes it interesting.

Though what I didn't mention is the fact that I definitely appreciate someone taking the chance to post something that isn't the same old landscape after landscape after portrait of their kitty.

I was sitting here reading all of the posts which seem to be a good calm discussion. I felt that I had to put my 2 cents worth in though.

Having been a cop for 37 years, I can say with authority that the series of pictures is not gross in any way, it also isn't very graphic (a good thing) compared to what a real gunshot suicide looks like. Trust me on that one.

My only complaint on this type of art is that it makes it all seem too "clean" and, in this instance, doesn't really capture the absolute despair involved.

I don't have any problem with the right to post this stuff, I think everybody got on the track of that question and forgot about the question of whether or not it tells the story. Poor acting aside, I don't think it does and I'm not sure you can in this manner. I've seen many other photos that capture the feeling without the shock value of the gun and blood.

Besides, I like landscapes and birds.

    Mike,
Clearly, the reason the bullet is blurred is that Scott was using too low a shutter speed. He should've posted the EXIF.

    "Bummer! It was loaded....."

"This'll be my best SHOT ever!"

"Now, wait a 1/100000 of a second! She said it was a dummy....."

Hahaha! Sorry, I have such a wicked humor, couldn't help myself! I dunno what to think of this pic. I think the idea itself is interesting, but I think it could be executed more effectively. Just one frame, close up with a pair of hypnotized eyes, a gun 15 cm from the templet, a bullet in between fully visable and completely frozen. I mean, to really FREEZE that final moment. No blood and mess.....

    Regards / Matty

    Picture this:

Tight crop, bridge of nose to halfway up forehead, showing white space (wall, etc) just slightly beside each temple. First shot, eyes look nervous. Second shot, eyes look terrified, tip of bullet is visible in the far edge of the frame (easily staged.) Third shot, eyes stare past the camera with no expression.

    Same story, different storyteller.
