I'm just getting used to this and playing around a bit. Here is the best of my practice shots in the backyard.

You're getting there. But the tree looks soft. If you used autofocus, I think it grabbed the grass, not the tree.

I am almost certain I had it set on Manual focus. I try to use this mode as much as possible since I am just a beginner photographer. I need to learn. Any other comments and advice would be much appreciated.

What lens were you using this with? A better way to learn would be to have a distance scale and a nice, smooth focus ring like on Canon's USM lenses.
