Today I had the great pleasure of shooting with my great friend and birder extraordinaire, Harry Behret. Ian's here, too - and we're going to have the 500mm shootout tomorrow, weather cooperating. Harry's a great guide, he really knows his birds!

Wildlife is hard! Here are a few that I was able to manage:

57462957-L.jpg

57464295-L.jpg

All shot with Canon 5D and 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 1.4xTC, at 280mm.

Enjoy (shooting with old friends) photography,

Andy

using your 70-200 on a FF camera even with the 1.4tc I would have thought would be too limiting to capture a hawk in flight.... but i guess you show once again how my thinking is wrong.... Really Nice images!!!!!
BTW, I can not believe ( now that I know how to spot them ) how many hawks are right along the Taconic Parkway. Yesterday I counted 12 between Millwood and "our exit".....

Have funny with Harry and Ian and one more BTW, when did you get a 500 mm???

Troy, shhhh, this is Florida where they were shooting! Diff states, the birds have diff rules as to how close they will let a human get.

Shhhhhh, maybe we could get colors for the different states... mine is a Carolina Blue, where the birds fly free and expect their personal space (a mile) to be respected). Actually, I am sure I have it easier than some, but I have to shoot "landscapes" with birds, most of the time (there are exceptions). Birds do not like people. here. And they don't have to, plenty of room to roam: marsh to marsh to marsh.

Still I have a 70-200, well it ain't easy. I used it a lot at the expo, Andy done real good, he really did!

    Damn!

So where are Harry and Ian's shots? Andy, your in Florida with Harry, you could have shot that Egret with a 50mm. Where are the Eagles and Caracara, and especially a Limpkin? Or has Harry sent them all up North for your visit?

Andy, we know, a great photographer is a great photographer, etc.....and well, that might be pushing it.

You got some wonderful bird shots with your toy 70-200. If you switched, I haven't seen them yet. The only place I could, and, in fact, had to use the 70-200 for birds was at the Wildlife Expo.

Come see me and we can "hunt" us some birds. What we get, to start with, is the hope of ONE eagle like a mile away! I carry everything, you probably go it with one lens. I have done that there. Lots of walking.

Much walking. And Hunting............as in trying to find! Then the birds have their little games such as, she will be almost here and I will fly! when she isn't looking, of course! HEHE.

You all come see me, you hear? Serious birding in these parts! With the emphasis on "hunt" right now.

red hats - like the orange that the hunters wear - so you won't shoot each other? Or to make the shooters more visible targets themselves? :D

I love this shot! It tells a story. See the photographer? See those white specks? Those are birds. Harry is the photographer's name. Harry is stalking the birds. He's using a light gathering magnifying lens on a stick to make his bird images look like he's taking their picture from 5 feet away!

Did you bring Harry some New York bagels? He must be missing them by now. That's the one thing we can't replace out here in Cali land, real genuine NY bagel taste! They tell me it's the difference in the water.

    Hey Andy,

Those shots aren't too bad for a rookie birdman. rolleyes1.gif

Seriously that's some real nice work especially the osprey and hawk shots.

To everyone else I'll be posting my shots once Andy stops sleeping in my computer room and I can access my shots.

Hi Andy, I love the Osprey; especially #2. What a beautiful bird. Great detail.
I can really empathize with Ginger. Birds are real skittish around here too. You really only get consistantly good results with a blind. I did manage to get a Great Gray Owl at night sitting on a fence post but the only way I could keep him long enough was to blind him with the car lights. And wouldn't you know it I DIDN'T HAVE MY GOOD CAMERA WITH ME!!! I had to use Glennie's 2MP!!! point and shoot! The picture is really good but I can't get anything bigger than 8x10 that holds together.
I found a promising looking marsh today where Great Horned Owl, Wood Ducks and GBHerons will be nesting in due season. Wish me luck with a 400mm.
