Has anyone noticed the price on Sandisk 8 Gb Ultra II Compact Flash recently??

Amazon has several vendors offering it for $349.00

Wow!! That is a far cry from last falls price. :):

You really could shoot all day and never change a card in the field. Even shooting high speed drive at sporting events.

The II is too slow for machine gunning. The buffer quickly fills up and you have to wait for space to clear. That's why I held out until the price of the 4GB III came into reach. It will hold upwards of 300 images. This morning I had my first anxiety attack about losing images. lol3.gif

There always will be better and faster. PF's point was that just a few month ago those 8Gb II were out of reach, and now they look like a real commodity. I, for one, will definitely keep an eye on them now - my 2Gb fills up waaaaay to fast...:):

Then, how about using this in a 5D perhaps. Shooting landscapes at Bryce?? No need to worry abut buffers. And you do not need to swap cards in the field. That's cool!!

But even in a 1DMkII, I think it will rock.

Rarely do I fill the buffer in it anyway. I have a Lexar 4GB 80X if I am in that mode.

The price of the 8Gb CF is almost 1/3 what it was 6-8 months ago.

It really will not be but another year or so at this rate, that laptops will no longer need hard drives. Think of the weight reduction and battery life extension too.

Now there's a thought. What do they reckon the physical limit is for flash memory? I know they're coming up with a new technology (storing stuff vertically? ne_nau.gif ) but they still have an idea of the outer limits, no?

I put my 4GB and 8GB Sandisk cards up here and thought asking $700 was fair because I had not checked the prices. It is amazing how much they have changed.

By the time I am back from my assignment I will be ready to get the latest body and memory cards. Thank heavens the lenses do not depreciate as quickly.

Maybe I should not have said that. :uhoh

    "Hopper, Grace M.
Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (1906 - 1992) was a US naval officer and mathematician who invented the computer compiler (called the A-O) in 1952. Her compiler revolutionized computer programming, automatically translating high-level instructions (easier to understand by people) into machine code (the cryptic, native language of the central processing unit). Hopper and a team developed the first user-friendly business programming language, COBOL (COmmon Business-Oriented Language). There is an unconfirmed story that Hopper determined than an error in the early Mark II computer was caused by a moth that was trapped in it; she then coined the term "computer bug." "

If you are looking for something a bit smaller...the Sandisk Extreme III 2GB card is a pretty decent price. With the recent price drops....and a rebate ...you can have a 2gb Extreme III for under $100 ($97.95). ($7 more than the Ultra II 2GB) Yeah..rebates are a PITA..but so is work. umph.gif
