I like that last one with the rutting actionthumb.gif

What are the collars for? Tracking?

Nice elk shots from the Cataloochee area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cataloochee is a very nice area to shoot since it is well off the beaten track in the Great Smoky Mountains and sees only a fraction of the traffic that plagues the rest of the park. I've seen the elk range from Cataloochee down to the Mountain Farm Village at the Cherokee entrance to the park.

If I remember correctly they are in the second of three stages and running about 2 years behind in trying to re-introduce elk to the Smoky Mountains.

Regretfully, until they get the herd growing (their loses from what I've read have been heavier than expected which may explain why they are behind in introducing the third group). Since they are tracking them while they are trying to get their numbers up, we will be seeing the tracking collars and ear tags for years to come.

I notice that you are from western NC so we need to hook up some time when you are shooting in Smoky Mountains. I'm there about 6-10 times every year.

Yea the collars are for tracking as Dixie said. They are re-introducing the elk back into the population.

Dixie, I've sent you a couple of PM's before, I just changed names. I was jdsphotography :D

Cades Cove and probably a day on the Roaring Forks Motor Nature Trail. Roaring Forks should open in March. The GSMNP web site still has the closure dates for last year.
