Ingredients for downed trees:
1) a long dry spell
2) A couple days with heavy rain
3) Santa Ana winds after that and...
...voila! Downed trees! This one happened in our back yard near Thanksgiving 2004 (we were in Rancho Cucamonga at the time) and, if the tree were any bigger, it would have taken out the corner of our dining room:
