How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

    The pictures
Thanks Harry and Steve, yes it was a huge thrill! And eagle sighting in my neck of the woods is a major event and this was about 1-1/2 hours north. The whole thing got quite funny. Susan whipped her truck around and parked back, we have no idea how spookie the dude might be so I'm sneeking down the side of the road trying to keep eagle in sight and be ready if he takes off. We are NOT on a major road and that reb with lens and lens hood must have looked like big stuff. All of a sudden cars are pulling off all over the place and everyone want to be helpful so I can get a better shot:): Aha folks this is like taking a squirt gun to a house fire. Anyway as we were getting ready to leave this lady pulls up with her 3 kids, her parents live sort of across the road and they had called her, she has been trying to catch that eagle there for 3 years. This guy was well in reach of the 70-200 with the 1.4. About 5 miles down the road two were flying low wing tip to wing tip. Geez PIcs shot with the Dreb and 17-85 IS

I know exactly what you mean. I was out photographing a bridge using my 17mm. The bridge spans a small lake. There are fish in the lake and this Bald Eagle knew it. Before I knew what was happening, this eagle does a circle, swoops low, and snagged a very nice sized carp (I think) and struggled to get the fish into a tree where it stopped, got a better grip and flew off.

I spent the whole time (about 45 seconds) just looking on in wonder and wondering why I didn't bring my longer lens!:bash

Aha its like hubby said if I would have had the other lens probably would have never seen an eagle. The other point he made, gotta love the guy, was if I didn't have a picture he would never have believed I saw one in the first place so be glad I had a camerarolleyes1.gif

You are so funny! And so is he! And I love your eagle!

He is small like mine. Only difference being that I had a 400mm lens on my camera. With my naked eye, all I could tell was that there might be a bird up there. I have learned to check out those specks. They are usually vultures, but one never knows.

I mean I am standing there, by the marsh, looking for egrets for egret fest, this eagle flys around, I shoot him, for the record, with my 400, but then he vanishes over towards the island. Naturally, I did not find him again. That is where I used to live, that is my island, so to speak. I have been going back and forth constantly since 1984, and I have never, ever seen an eagle there before!

Now, I guess the question is, should I start driving to far places looking for these things, AGAIN, or should I just go back to that marsh area, mouse in hand and wait for that eagle?

Thusie, I really wondered about god, my imagination, all sorts of things over that frustrating experience. When I got to the beach, I took the wrong lens there, too...............took the macro (to a sunset, haha), should have taken the wide angle, but I had my husband carry the 400 in case I saw another eagle. Never know.

Probably the next close up eagle photo will come from NYC or something.

Thusie, I love your eagle! And, as you say it is a big deal there. Must be a nest close by. But I don't know, still, why eagles are seasonal. I don't know where they "summer". The Hamptons?????

Not sure a mouse would be quite the way to go:):

Well Ginger I don't know so decided to call a friend of mine who would. Her answer is, she is going to do more checking, no eagles do not migrate. What you are probably seeing are youngsters as they move out on their own. New areas with suitable habitat. Which is pretty darn cool actually. She also said that the eagles are doing so well they are looking to take them off the endangerd species list. They will still probably keep the special eagle provision.
It makes sense since we have had two nesting pairs move into my county is the last couple years, no eagles here before in my lifetime. The first ones they gave the location in the newspaper and it got so nuts they put up barracades with cops, 300 yards was as close as anyone could get. This time they published we had another pair but no real location of where.

Even though your picture is small Thusie, its still your Eagle, and under the circumstances an excellent capture. My first capture was a similar moment. He was in a tree as we were driving along the highway, and I almost caused an accident stopping, as well as many other people when they saw him. In my case however, he stayed around long enough for me to get out my camera and 200MM to take several pictures up close. I thanked him, and the picture gods who blessed me. As it turned out, it led me to the location where all the other Eagles were hanging out, and you have seen the excess of photographs they allowed me to take. I've never met a nicer bunch of Eagles. You may be able to do the same with some good tacking, and find their nest to do some outstanding work. I'm looking forward to more of your Eagles....Good luckclap.gifclap.gif

Dallas I have a plan, thank you! Don called it a mission:): The best way to find eagles is check the DNR website for the yearly fall winter count. We have 2 confirmed for my county. Richland, where this eagle was has 11, BUT it is Knox Co. right above me that has a nice bunch of 24. Then water and habitat, bingo Knox lake!

Ohio's eagle population jumped from 322 last year to 526 this year with over 300 at breeding age. Now that is just TITS! Not just for pictures but it has been a long haul and lots of work, they're BACKKKKK. PLUS 2 goldens were also counted and that number should grow with the re-into programs going in in Georgia and Tenn.clap.gifclapclap.gif
