Popular Photography & Imaging is making a credit card offer (I'm not hawking the card) with one of my photos as an option for the background on the card. They call it a "Sunset" in the offer, but it is actually a sunrise taken during the fall of 2004 from the parking area at Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Here is the capture from the offer on the Pop Photo web site.

Well they could have made it a little larger. :D

They flipped the image horizontally so the Pop Photo logo could go in the upper right hand corner of the card.

Here is the flipped version.

57896623-L.jpg

Here's the actual shot.

57896629-L.jpg

I punched the colors, but the main thing that I did to get the shot was a +3 ND graduated filter (actually a +1 & a +2 stacked) to knock the sky down enough to bring out the ridges and valleys in the foreground.

    Thanks for the kind comments.

Actually, the card is number three. I had another bookcover on a book, Pilgrimage And Healing, published back in October by the University of Arizona Press.

Additional sunrises taken on the same trip as the one above can be seen at the following link:

I didn't look at the rates on the card. :D

I've been in that parking lot! Someone made me go, don't remember, may have been my oldest daughter. Sometimes I can be a pain in the........

I do remember it, though, the damn parking lot!

And it didn't look like that either!ne_nau.gif It was probably the middle of the day, lots of other cars. Tons of other cars. I saw more cars than mountains.rolleyes1.gif

Really cool how you made that place look so good! I really ought to get into the filters and the tripod and stuff. For some reason my body has fallen apart. I am still whining from being on the beach at sunset today. Not warm yet. Almost time for you to get up, and I still have my coat on from earlier. Cold, windy and wet. But I usually am so hyped I don't feel it.

It was probably a reaction to my eagle sighting. You might want to catch that photo. Interesting thing about Carolina Eagles............

That shot is cool! I have been there. I don't like tourists, but you didn't do it that way! Wonderful shot! Was anyone else there? Do you remember?

This is one great shot! Congratulations!

ND grad filters are on top of my "to buy" list. Your photo is a great example of how useful they can be.

Was there anyone else there? Only about 60-70 photographers lined up along the edge of the parking lot. 10-15 minutes after the sun came up virtually everyone was gone and the parking lot empty. ...but you have to admire them all because we were up there waiting for the sun to come up in about 27°F with the wind blowing about 15-20 mph.

Thanks also to everyone else. Your kind comments are greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Ian, Tessa & Cookie.

Cookie, those ND's are a great investment for shooting sunrises and sets as well as toning down the sky during days when the foreground is somewhat backlit. Another great use is for shooting reflections in water which tend to be about 2 f/stops difference between the main subject and it's reflection in the water.
