I'm of two minds about the graffiti. On the one hand, I agree that it detracts from the pillboxes as graphic reminders of the violence that once happened there. On the other hand, the contrast between the peace time graffiti, with its decidely whimsical themes, and the menace of the pillboxes, is a strong statement in its own way.
As with the Guatemala photo, it serves as a reminder of how easily evil and good coexist in the universe. As Joker said in "Full Metal Jacket":
Joker: I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man sir.
Colonel: The what?
Joker: The duality of man, the Jungian thing, sir.
On the whole, however, I wish they hadn't defaced them!
