I like # 1. The lighting is nice and it certainly is a rough old wheel. Numbers 2 and 4 are both a little out of focus and the idea of roughness would come through better if at least the rough areas of the shots were in sharp focus. I like number 3 a lot although the background is somewhat distracting. I'd like to see a re-shoot on it. For my tastes it needs blacker blacks. Needs some work in curves to give it some "pop". I think it has potential and could be improved upon. thumb.gif

Same comment as I posted in the whipping post.

If I goto levels in any of these pictures or look at teh histogram, they lack the full range of grey levels in this case, and all could use a little bit more contrast. This is opinion though. If I had to do it, I would do them over and use a different BW conversion.

    FWIW,

The black and white on these was done using the Xt's built in black and white. Maybe next time I will just go RAW and convert later.

I hope you do not mind, but 5 minutes, auto level, auto contrast, curves, and a little color balance on shadows only.

    XO,

ps. let me know if it bothers or offends you what I did with your picture, and I'd be happy to delete the post.

When I visit places like this, I often wonder why the people left. They're
nice shots to reflect over. I like #1 the best.

As for conversions, I'm not convinced that the in-camera B&W is as good
as something you can squeeze out in PS.

Thanks for all the comments folks. To XO I dont mind the redo....though it looks kinda purpleish to me. I really think my version is a little better. I mean these days its not becoming so much how good a photographer you are it seems to be how much of a photoshop pro you are. I like to keep it natural to what came out of the camera. I did adjust the curves on this one....just probably not to the likeing of everyone here. Thanks for the good comments though. thumb.gif

It is indeed a little purplish as I toned the shadows a little towards blue/magenta.
