Any other options for Canon 100/2.8 macro tripod collar?

The price just seems utterly ridiculous. Probably because it works on the 180L lens, they think the can jack up the price. There has to be some other option out there. It makes the Sigma 150/2.8 very attractive since it comes with the hood and collar and has a longer minimum focus distance.

I don't think it's necessary at all.

So it's nicely weighted on a 20D? I'm just looking out for the ballhead on my long-range radar.

The only real advantage to the tripod collar is that you can rotate the camera and lens on the lens axis if you decide to switch from portrait mode to landscape mode. That is harder to do in macro mode with an L-bracket.
