I'm having a problem understanding the relationships between galeries, categories and what not. It seems that some of them I can rename other I cannot.

The help screens don't cover this. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

    Thanks,

So first off, let me start by illustrating the organization heirarchy. It very simply goes like this:
    Categories > Subcategories > Galleries

Galleries are the only level that can have images in them. Categories and Subcategories don't show up on the site unless they have Galleries in them.

With a Standard account, you create your own Subcategories. Once you have created them, you can rename them at will or delete them. With a Power or Pro account, you can also create your own Categories. You cannot rename or delete one of our existing Categories, but you can rename and delete your custom Categories.

At any time, you can easily change the categorization of a gallery in your Customize Gallery settings. It is a simple matter of choosing a new category from the list, and then a sub-category if you want.

    Good luck!

Can you create subcategories with a hyphen - in the name? For example I created a subcategory of 10-1-2004 under Events and it did not show. At first I thought I did some wrong, so I created my with the name MySubCategory and it shows up. If this is the case that you cannot use hyphens, what other characters are not allowed?

I'm trying to setup an event purchase site where I take pictures at events, give out business cards and or flyers for people go to the website (smugmug) and order the pictures.

I thought the easiest way to organize this would be to have the category be Events, then have subcategories with the date of the event, for example 10-1-2004, 10-2-2004, 12-25-2004 etc. People should know what date they were at lets say Juniors football game, hmm that was on Saturday, October, 2nd (10-2-2004)

    Thanks,

    can not replciate ...
I just created a subcategory with dashes in it and it worked fine (even using a date format). We allow dashes, spaces and alphanumberic characters. Are you trying to use any special dash, like an mdash or are you copying the date from somewhere else? Normally if you enter in a character that we don't like, you will be warned ...

    Resurrecting this....

In my effort to rename the stock "People" category to "Clients", the only way to do this is to make the "Clients" category, and then move all of those galleries from "People" to "Clients"?

Yes. You cannot rename the existing default categories, because all of our customers are using those. You can only rename custom categories. So in this case, you would create a new category and then in the customize gallery options choose that category instead of People.

    Good luck!
