How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Nice series, Harry. I never did see any of these interesting birds at MI3. Hmm guess maybe a trip back up that way is in order. :D I've not seen these "skimmers" down here. Although I've just read in an article that there are 80 eagles nest between Sarasota county and Manatee county.

Thanks Jeff. We just got lucky that day as they decided to skim in this pond right in front of us.

Thanks for showing us these fascinating birds Harry. I had never seen any, and find them very interesting, much less being able to capture any.

Wow Harry, how do you do it man? How do you get shutter speeds in excess of 1/1oooth sec. at f5.6? You must be shooting at a pretty fast ISO but your clarity and detail are superb and your noise management is also superb. And what's the sensor size on your camera? What does a 500mm lens work out to if expressed in 35mm equivellent terms?

I guess you know by now that Glennie and I have moved into our capital city, Ottawa. I was rather apprehensive about giving up my rural life but I have found that Ottawa has some wonderful undeveloped park land and the wildlife IN THE CITY is much less prone to spooking than out in the country.
We have the best urban nature and wildlife reserve in the entire nation just 15 min from our new house. I've already lucked onto a Great Horned Owl and I'm getting pretty serious about adding the pursuit of wildlife to my passion for nature and landscapes. Wish us luck and skill.

The sensor in the D2X is a 23.7 X 16.7mm DMOS sensor. F5.6 is fairly wide open on the 500mm F/4 lens and I used that setting to keep me sutter speed high. These shots were taken at ISO's 250 and 320. The 500mm with the 1.5 magnification factor of the D2X works out to 750mm in 35mm equivalent terms. The first shot was taken in high speed crop mode whish has a 2.0 mag factor making it 1000mm in 35mm equivalent terms.

I guess you know by now that Glennie and I have moved into our capital city, Ottawa. I was rather apprehensive about giving up my rural life but I have found that Ottawa has some wonderful undeveloped park land and the wildlife IN THE CITY is much less prone to spooking than out in the country.

Good luck Bob. It sound like you have some good photo ops available. looking forward to seeing some of your shots.
