you can see the exposure difficulties with these-i want to get back to the colony this week and get one directly underneath so that exposure is even and the wings are back lit59242612-M.jpg

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

They are hard to shoot greg i know. I went for a walk into their colony at low tide in the mangroves to get this & this.

They really dont like visitors & let you know ! They are here in the kazillions.

You know those would give me "the willies", no relationship w "the little willies" CD that was just released.

I don't think I would want one that close to me.

    Which lens?

    Tough shot!!

I actually like the way the wing picks up the reflection of the light and almost looks metallic. Different look.

I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.

I like the bright light on his one wing, but wonder if you couldn't lighten the left a little for some detail. Don't know what software you use??? What interesting subject-matter though! Keep posting your results. :):

Is that worse than the bird flu? rolleyes1.gif

Now why would I think that is funny?

As they talk about this "bird flu" migrating to the wild birds over the border, I think of my egrets!

Something this AM about how they know how to handle this, after all they have slaughtered many 1000s of birds before, over something in two diff states.

I am sure that an egret could be worked up by birdman to illustrate their reactions to this news: :wow

And perhaps: :jawdrop with a run to safety! (In SC, Fla?) :hide

ginger (aahhhh, what is a little bit of rabies? probably would not make CNN)

    thanks bat fanciers
i am still developing my in flight technique-i used my pentax super-multi-coated takumar 300/4 handheld-its a manual focus lens so pre- focussing on where you think the bat is going is necessary and then a bit of wrist twisting to keep it in focus-not having a split circle focussing screen is holding me back a bit-its on the list-either a katz eye or haoda screen

my newly acquired smc takumar 400/5.6 is a bit much to handhold, but i am practising...sitting down with knees up as an elbow support seems to be the way to go..

i am going back in few days and will try lying flat on my back to get an underneath shot which is evenly exposed-i'll put some more up next week-eventually i hope to get a frame filler.

So Greg, do you have a flash for the Pentax? If you do, these type shots are perfect spot to use a Better Beamer. If these little guys are close enough, you might not even need a BB. Just an decent powered external flash.

I like the shot and if you can get both wings lit as well, you'll come home with some great shots.
