Little River Falls - Little River Canyon National Preserve

Lookout Mountain is a somewhat strange mountain. It appears to start up near Chattanooga, TN and runs through northwest Georgia into northeast Alabama. It is really a long mountain ridge.

Little River Canyon starts at 1,900 feet above sea level in Desoto State Park near Mentone, AL and runs though Little River Canyon National Preserve for about 40-50 miles down to Weiss Lake at 650 feet above sea level near Centre, Alabama. The really weird part is that Little River Canyon is a river gorge system that actually follows the top of the ridge formed by Lookout Mountain which has valleys on either side of it. Normally a river or stream will start near the top of a mountain take a relatively short path down to a valley. That is not the case with Little River Canyon as it follows the length of the ridge at the very top.

There are many falls and cascades along the length of Little River and this spring and summer I am planning on shooting as many of them as I can. I've started with Little River Falls and hope to add more during the coming months.

The photos will be located in my Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, & West Virginia Gallery.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

This is a nice shot. Wait, it's a beauty. Why? The water seems to flow and
I really dig the layers in the rock too.

I'm definetly looking forward to more.

Beautiful stuff there Dixie. I always love looking at your shots.

Since I'm going to be in Alabama come next Monday, I was planning on heading up to Little River Canyon and doing some shooting. I'm definately looking forward to it now!

Thanks, CMaster. Be sure and visit DeSoto State Park as well. It's at the northern end of the Little River Canyon and there are at least four falls and one cascade within a mile of the roadway.

There are also other falls along the Little River Canyon, but depending upon the time you will have the ones mentioned above are the most accessible and all can be done in a day.
