wELL TO BE HONEST SO FAR iM NOT THRILLED, BUT I DID TEST THIS NEW LENS, Mostly wide open, at different focal lenghts, in and out clouds and sun. slow but Not overly slow. Not tack sharp. I was hoping for sharpness more than speed. ??? Il lgive it another week or so before deciding to keep it or send it back and get the 1x7 converter , If i am going to lose image quality and still only get around 300 mm I may as well save $1,000. to do it. all JPG fine Some are stright out of them camera some are resized and USM just a bit to get close to actual image. Ill have to see how some of them print. C&C

closer,,, Im thinking the front leg is sharper ( had it on close subject focus) , but the face has already fallen off my depth of field, so softer, so maybe playiong with a great f stop 6-7 should blur the background but give me a bit more DOF on my subject ?

I have always found the 80-400 to be at its's sharpest at 7.1 and 8 but I've gotten good results with it more wide open

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Great shot of the colt playing, sorry you're not completely happy with your new lens. You might give it some more time though.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but if your primary goal is sharpness than a prime might suit you better than a zoom or a TC. I also love the sharp images and I'm sure a lot happier with my prime than I was with my zoom.

Here are a couple of reviews of the 80-400 that should answer most of your questions about the lens.
