I shot the dress rehearsal last night for the performance that opens tonight at the Wang. I've only just gotten started culling and processing the shots. The light was very dramatic, i.e., dark and strange colored, so I didn't get as many really good ones as I might have liked. All were shot with Canon 5D + 85mm f/1.2L @ ISO 1600. Details are available for each shot in my gallery.

    You are doing better with that 85 f/1.2 than I did. Good work and I'm glad to see my lens in good hands.

    This is utterly gorgeous. I would give a lot to get stage access for shots like this.

    As an ex ballet dancer I love these. Beautiful skin tone, the lighting really helps with the gorgeous colours. My fav are Yuri Yanowsky in Etesian, Joel Prouty & Carlos Molena in Lambarena & Yuri Yanowsky in Lambarena only for the fact that these show every muscle in there bodies working to there fullest & the level of skill & how much hard work is put into dance.

    Very lucky to have such close access.

    Thanks very much everyone. I really appreciate the comments. This turned out to be a hard shoot because of the light. There were a lot of moments I didn't capture well enough. But here are a couple more that I do like:

    I think this might be by far my favourite shot, just because of the gorgeous colors you captured in it, not to mention the fact that he's just flying there mid leap.

    I like them All but would love to know more about the Third Photography. In low lighting I see a crisp Shot of a rapid movement. Please teach us all how this was done. I do not see the marks of a flash either.

    Let's see, what have I learned about shooting these performances?
    1. Canon 5D @ 1600 is a miracle. There is noise, but less than TriX film grain.
    2. 85mm f/1.2L has been the right lens for me for these performances. The FOV is wide enough to encompass the stage if I get back a few rows, and with a little cropping I can get pretty good single figures from the front row or side of the stage.
    3. No flash, even if I wanted.
    4. I've learned to use shutter priority (TV) mode, but I set Custom Function 16 (safety shift) to allow it to override my preferred shutter speed if it cannot expose properly.
    5. When the lighting is dark and they use spots I use spot metering.
