Hit Counter HTML code?

Does anyone know if there is some HTML code that will make a basic "hit counter". I googled the topic and found a bunch of free sites that provide HTML code, but they all want to link back their own site. This makes me a little nervous. Anyone had any experience with any of these site? Is there a simple way to code this without using one of these services? Thanks in advance.

I just put a counter on my site from digits.com. They ask for a reciprocal link, but I don't mind because it works great! You can see it on my site www.landrum.smugmug.com. They give you the code to paste on your site, so I suppose you don't HAVE to give them a link...but I figure it's the least I can do for the free code.

I've used these 2 in the past

    http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/counter/index.php

    http://www.nedstat.com/usa/f80125e80150_index.htm

Nedstat is probably better and gives better stats. Bravenet can get annoying. With either, be sure to sign up using spam account 'cuz spam will increase...especially with Bravenet.

And both claim that images/code can't be manipulated. Fact is, it doesn't matter. They aren't going to "shut you down" if you don't link back. They simply don't have the time to do this with millions of websites. I'm living proof of this :)

    Thomas,
I have one word for you: StatCounter.
Or, if you want a second one - Google Analytics.

I'm using both and pretty happy with them.

15524779-Ti.gif with Nik. They are both free, easy to set up and give complementay information. No spam from either source AFAIK.

15524779-Ti.gif look in the navbar on top of dgrin (or click on the tutorials link in my signature). Scroll all the way down, and there are tutorials on how to implement both on smugmug thumb.gif

Statcounter seems to be very popular around here and I haven't had any issues. I don't use the visible hit counter but I like their visitor statistics. Like Smugmug, they are also open with customers and have a forum like this one.

I've been using StatCounter for years and I love them. You can also upgrade to a paid version that has a larger log file (the free version only keeps stats on a short history of your visitors).

Well, StatCounter looks nice. However I prefer GoStats. It have many features available in the free version, and yes, it has the possibility to upgrade to pro version, which unleashes powerful options in statistics summary view.

It's available from http://gostats.com as well in other version languages: gostats.ru, gostats.vn, gostats.de, and so on . :)
