So I'm a little slow. Would I be right in saying that Microsoft's Atlas is a way to do AJAX but with ASP.net rather than javascript?

it's a bunch of .net api's that generate all the ajax javascript and stuff for you. supposedly cross browser.

i havent used it yet as we're already invested in the roll yer own approach. i'll probably play around with it but i doubt we'll use it at work. we have to meet section 508 accessibility standards and historically, the asp.net code generation hasn't given us the control over the output that we need. VS.net 2005 supposedly fixes that, but we're just getting started with that so we'll see.
