Quality work LV. Really nice. How much extension are you using to get to 3.4 : 1?

    Thanks Eric,
Always get odd shots when the web doesn't show- I actually took a sequence of about 10 pics of this spider- I just liked it's colours. :)

I was using 33mm of extension tubes plus the front lens element out of an old 35-135mm zoom lens I had on my 105mm EX macro lens. This lens is equivalent to a reversed 50mm lens ie about 20 dioptre but gives a brighter FOV and slightly longer focus distance than a reversed 50mm.
The zoom lens was a Tamron pentax K mount fit lens about 30 years old but the front glass seems excellent.
Not exactly elegantly fitted but it works :)
If I use all my tubes (65mm) plus the lens I get just under 4:1 - sort of puts me off the cash outlay for an MPE-65 :)

Wow that is some setup LV. You are getting great results. I still haven't had much time to play with my new extension tubes. If I get anything decent I'll put them up. They are 12mm, 20mm & 36mm. I have been trying it out with all three stacked for a total of 68mm. I'll have to pull out my macro book to recall how to calculate the ratio for my 100mm lens plus the extension.

Thanks for the comments all, much appreciated.
Thomas- you will find the calculated magnification with extension tubes for a macro lens is not very accurate (I think because the actual focal length reduces at minimum focus).
With 68mm of tubes on your 100mm lens you will get just over 2:1 and with around 33mm you'll get about 1.5:1. The easiest way of checking is just to take a pic of the mm scale on a ruler.

rad shots, awesome raindrops and the jumping spider is sweet!
It's weird that photographers spend years or even a whole lifetime, trying to capture moments that added together, don't even amount to a couple of hours.

Excellent shots and work as always sir Brian. Clear and sharp. That last minute little spider there, is one that we don't normally get to see. We have them on Daffodils here Brian. They are so small most people never see them. Even when they are adults they don't change. All the best Brian and brilliant work, thats some ratio on that baby mate mwink.gif

Seem to be taking a lot of shots recently at highish ratios- still waiting for the big bugs to appear :)

As you may have noticed I'm more interested in whether things work rather than how they look :)
This setup also has a further advantage in that you can focus by pushing against the sponge ring as normally I'm resting it on a surface to take the shots.
