this story is the god's honest truth with no exaggeration what-so-ever!
i went down to "shoot" the KPOTD for DON_W and his great image Artichoke Man on 3/25/2006. when i got to nyc it wasnt there, it turns out they didnt put up his picture till after i left. i was disgusted with myself so i decided to try to get back to nyc on 3/26/2006 figuring his picture would still be there if i went early enough. anyway i talked my wife and kids to go to nyc for the day - they knew about Don's picture. we pull up to the kodak jumbotron and my kids start screaming we see it we see it!! i was so relieved - i jump out of the car i aim my camera at the jumbotron and at that very second - THEY CHANGE THE PICTURE OF THE DAY! IM SAYING TO MYSELF WHAT THE $%&^ JUST HAPPENED HERE! THERE WAS NO DELAY AS I WAS PRESSING THE SHUTTER THE PICTURE CHANGED TO ANOTHER KPOTD...
i feel so terrible about this :cry
I know its the most impossible story to believe but i swear its the truth...

But there's an upside to this story. You're a good man, a good friend, and honest. Heck, you didn't need to tell anyone that story...

Troy, you were very good to not only try once, but a 2nd time. It's been said before, but the people of Dgrin are fantastic.

You get an A+ for effort. Sometimes it's hard to recognize the effort behind the scenes to capture that one moment.
While the effort didn't pay off this time, the attitude, and willingness to go the extra mile has, and will serve you well.

What a bummer!
I at least hope you and your family got to enjoy some NYC time despite that frustrating disappointment!
Sometimes you just can't win!

Showing my ignorance again but:
Seems to me that the KTOPD operations staff would send the selected photog a shot of their big screen photo via email if desired. What would it take, 1 person 1 camera and 10 min., if they are housed at or near the jumbo-tron. The shot wouldn't need to be the best just available.

Yes, and thy could even charge for the service.
An added revenue source to make the investors happy . . . with diminishing film sales etc.
I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.

He made a special trip into the City not once, but twice, to get the photo. That's an incredible effort and a great favor, by someone I've never even met!
Why Kodak didn't put up the picture on schedule last Saturday is something I'll never know. I guess that's their privilege, since it's their contest and their jumbotron. But it never occurred to me that if Troy got there at 6am, it wouldn't be there for him! Seemed like a good plan to me!
Going back the next day was a bit chancey, but he did it anyway, only to have the bizarre experience of seeing it disappear right before his eyes.
Anyway, thanks, Troy, for going the extra mile (or the extra 50 miles?). I hope it didn't ruin your weekend.
