Google goes private, makes a Mt. McKinley of money, and slowly transitions from good guys to evil in the public's mind.

I don't think they're evil, myself. Just don't rely on them to hold onto your email. Back up.

I've read that in several places now... personally, I think Bob is becoming somewhat of an urban myth.

That said, I don't even have any really crucial info there, but I did download a copy of all my messages from Gmail via POP to my home computer the other day.

I use Thunderbird to download from Gmail normally. All my mail is on my machine and I can back it up any time I want. I rather suspect that Google is going to take better care of my data than I will, however. :D

I didn't say they're evil. I said the public perception of them is changing. This story is a good example of the transition happening. Contrary to what many believe, perception isn't always reality.

I thought that you thought that I thought they were evil. I never thought that you thought they were evil.

No, I didn't think you thought they were evil, although I can see that that's what you thought I thought, even though I wasn't thinking it.

Hmm, don't rely on a free service (is it still beta?) for your mission critical email account?!?! I am shocked...SHOCKED!!!!

{edit}I just went and checked, yes it is still beta. Why would anyone rely on a free beta service for anything?!?!

I say, let this be a lesson to him and anyone else who would act as foolish.

    I totally agree.
I have gmail, but it's only for my fifth in line email service. Nothing important on there for me.
