15 yr old souvenir vendor outside of temple in Bagan, Myanmar. She could speak 4 languages, besides her own, well enough to get along with tourists pretty well. She had 5 years of school because her parents didn't have $ for school and she needed to work.

It's a ground up root that acts as both sun block and cosmetic. Usually its a bit heavier than that.

This is a great shot, lew. I didn't get a single decent one of a little girl like that in the 10 days I was in Burma, and I kept an eye out (unfortunately I had gotten my camera aabout a week earlier, maybe when I go back...) here's the closest I have to it, and I'm not really happy about it. I call it "2 girls at amarapura, or, what happens when you haven't figured out how to use the hgih ISO yet.":

    Beautiful shots Lew.
    Interesting cultural information also.

    Thanks for sharing.

It actually is from a tree bark.

When I was a kid, I hated putting that on; 1-because I believe that it is for girls, 2-when that thing dries I can't move my face. Talk about heavy! My grandmothers, my mom, and all the old ladies that looked after me insisted. I can't leave the house without it.

I finally got my way when I turned 15.... :D
