Sorry, but... no. Either *the* intended subject is missing, or there's too many indeterminate little subjects vying for attention and aren't seen.

I love this shot... to me, I see an empty counter that seems to be once occupied. I see the waiter (Guy behind the counter) kind of looking off towards the door, probably thinking to himself "Where is everyong Going? Was it something I said?"
I say good shot I like....

I had worked up some variations. I guess I'll post them. Thanks for looking.

Thanks Steve. Maybe I gave up too quickly. As I said in my opening post, I think there's "something" here. I think I just need to finesse it. Thanks for the support.

Boy does this bring back memories! When I lived on Long Island, and later New Jersey we had diners... in fact my one of my last trips there I met a friend in one in NJ.
I like it, nostaligic, I like seeing the 3 chairs and the left over coffee fixin's, yet to be cleared away for a new customer. I like seeing the colors of the mini juke box (or whatever they are called) and the green chairs...
It's a very warm and welcoming photo (empty chair just waiting for me!).

I'm gonna stick with this one and see what I can make of it. Here's a try with a little desat as suggested.

So we steer clear of Van Ness, but maybe we'll have to try to get to Mel's Diner sometime soon. I did see another diner off the Embarcadero too.

Well-I like the shot, in fact, I *really* like the shot and the idea.
Two 'small' suggestions on the original-
Level your 'horizon', it's just a tiny bit leaning down to the right.
DOF could have been a bit tighter to blur the background more.
The three variations you posted all work as well, and can stand on their own. But I like the openess of the first one posted, it reminds me of older b&w 'environmental portraits I've seen from the thirties and forties.
Your eye gets sharper everyday!
Good luck and good light,

I like the photo!
It looks like a very busy place to me.
Counter top full of cups and trash like maybe one of the waiters called
in sick today. You can see that there are several people on the other
side of the room. Maybe they did not leave a tip so, the waiter is slow about cleaning the table . I hate to see dirty tables when I enter a
cafe to eat or get some coffee.

I really like the nostalgic feeling you captured. The empty stools can be interpreted in several ways...warm and inviting, lonely and sad, or simply as interesting graphic elements. Any way you look at it, it evokes a mood/emotion, so I'd say it's a winner!
Cheers!

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all the evidence that you tried~
