Your first shot reminds me of mine, I to need more practice. Your second shot is what I am trying to achieve. I am having difficulty locating a flying bird in the view finder in time to take the shop.
I tried the same think with about 1% success but it was a good experience. I tried shooting with both eyes open so I could see the bird approching and it worked pretty good when you see him in your left eye release the shutter, i found if I waited to see him in the viewer he was long gone by the time I reacted. I also found many times they make the same pass track back and fourth atleast on the river behind my house so I tried to guess where they were going and pick them up at a point they passed on the last flight. great practice.
At least you're improving Jeff. Imagine is the firsts shot came after all that practice.
Seriously teh only way to get better at this stuff is hust to go out there and do it. The best BIF shooter I know had to practice over a year and shoot around 100,000 shots to get it down.

what size bird are you going for the 2 eye idea as was placed in this thread is a good idea once you get comfee with it butt the best ideas are try with culls first they glide and have a flight path ,a very good way to get your panning skills then shot what you can find .the swifts are the hardest thing i have shot --what i do is look and see if they have a path then try to pick one pan with it and if i get a focus click click oh yea and pray
I took this shot a few weekends ago...It is very hard to try and get those flying objects in viewfinder!!
cull are good practice and it does get easier as you work at it one big thing it not get excited get a focus and hold then click if saw any of my kingfisher shots :cry i get to busy going oh boy oh boy that i miss then it flys over to ben he shoots it and they have a good laugh but not me :cry

you have it down crow just about the same tech i use but if you can see him in your left eye move and pan with it .The path they fly in they do move over the same area and thats how my luck as improved to 2% and it is good pratice you move fast and also learn new 4 letter words thanks for adding this your advice is very good

I wish I had half of your successes!
Still that would have been a helluva shot. :cry

I guess those near misses help us excel if we persevere.
Ok, I guess I'll go back out there and give it another couple a hundred shots until I get it right:D
