White Sands New Mexico

I went to the White Sands national monument on a road trip around the south west. This was my first time shooting in the dunes and I was hoping to get a classic dune shot. As road trips go I was not running on a tight time schedule and got to the dunes about 45 minutes before sunset. This left me scrambling about looking for a dune the right shape and angle to the sun that also had not been walked on yet! I didnt have enough time to find what I wanted and it turns out about 15 minutes before the sun went down a huge cloud bank came in and took all the contrasting shadows out of the dunes. O well!
I did capture a few of the plants that were leaving nice tracks in the sand from the wind.
So tip of the day: Unless your in really good shape and can run across sand quickly, get to the dunes early!

very nice, like it
I must say that I'd trade this shot for the 'seen it a 100 times' classic dune shot any day...Very well done!

Did you use a circular polarizer on this one?

Yes, I was using a circular polarizer while shooting there.
This was shot at 1/160, f7.1, 17mm
One thing I learned while here was to overexpose by one or two stops. The meter was being fooled by the bright white sand so following the meter was leading to underexposed images.
