Maiward Lion - Reading UK

Had a wander about with my sons today... we hopped a train to Reading, UK.

In the garden, near the Abby Ruins, is this war memorial. A rather large one, it stands in honour of the Berkshire, Reading regiment for thier valour in the Afgan war. 1880

I am not a history buff, though there is an interesting read here:

http://www.britishbattles.com/second-afghan-war/maiwand.htm

also an image of the complete monument, for those who wish to look.

I hope posting an external URL is within the rules, I didn't see anywhere in the rules that was contrary. If I am wrong, I apologise and will, of course, edit this post.

Anyway.. the sky was Bright and the sun was behind the statue. I used a tiny bit of Photoshop to draw to the final image, though the original was not far from this.

Just thought it was a cool image and I look forward to comments, positive or negative. I can take it :D

All the Best!

Dave

    It's roaring, not boring.

Would this work in color with a replacement gradient background?

Why does the Lion get used so often for Memorials and at enterances of old buildings or even Government buildings????
We have some here too, and I have seen them on my travels as well.
What does a Lion represent ??? do you know ??

Theres a lot of detail going into making that Lion in your shot.
    Thanks for sharing.......... Skippy (Australia)

If the others 21 are like myself (not experienced ) why complaining? Would you like to have 22 bla bla... posts? Wait for the Big guys.
    Anyway, welcome.

    Dave:

Welcome to dGrin and thanks for posting a link to a very interesting read.
I love your lion. Interesting perspective, nice composition and the high-key contrast seems to help in this case... there's enough contrast in the stone and shadows and edge detail on the mane to justify the blown areas.

Skippy had a good point about what does the lion represent. With statues of famous generals or knights the position of the horse ( legs ) is symbolic of the outcome of the battle for the rider, ie wounded, killed, victorious.
Darn! now Ill have to look this up umph.gif

    Oh yes, nice pic. :D
