I just had a wonderful day hanging under the cherry blossoms here in Japan and I got a little surprise visit from this very brave Great Heron. He let me get closer to him than any other large bird has before. All were taken with the D70s and 80-200 f2.8.

funny enough this sign says something along the lines of "No Fishing"

I have the contrast a little to high in this one......I'll fix it later.

Thanks for looking,
Ian

Excellent captures Ian. Is it their mating season? They have some very vivid colors around theri bills. Much more vivid than our stateside herons normally have.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

First of all - Thank you all for the kind compliments and remarks - it's really appreciated. I think I'm going to get hooked on birding.

I'll try to answer the questions I remember reading.
The location was Himeji, Japan (Hyogo Prefecture).

The lens is the second version of the Nikon 80-200 f2.8 (the old push-pull). It is a bit slow focussing but, it's a great lens none-the-less.

About the Herons in Japan. I really don't know a whole lot about them. Their mating seasons....none of that. I'm going to have to buy a birding book. I know that they can be seen pretty much year round so I don't know that they migrate and, I have never seen their babies or mating rituals. I'd love to capture that though.

    Again, thank you.
    Ian

Maybe someone can tell me what kind of woodpecker this is. Again in Japan - Akashi this time.

Gorgeous Herons, especially the last one and I don't know what kind of woodpecker that is but it sure is cool looking. Thanks for posting these, it is good to see some animals from other parts of the world, especially well taken shots like these.
