50mm f1.8 or 18-55mm f3.5-5.6?

im going to New Mexico and i dont want to take to mush stuff. if you only can take one which will it be? 50mm f1.8 or 18-55mm f3.5-5.6

    for what camera? what kinds of subjects? what do you like to shoot?

    Rebel XT im new to this as u can see. i dont no want i like to shot yet i guess. Landscape.

    18-55 for two reasons. One, on the XT or any digital with the same sensor size, the 50mm becomes a moderate telephoto lens which may be too narrow for most landscapes. Two, unless you're shooting at twilight, there oughta be plenty of light outdoors for the 18-55 so you won't need the speed of f1.8.

    I usually take my 50mm 1.8 along anyway, because it's small and light and if anything were to happen to it, well, I'm only out $75.
