Just got my first DSLR - Nikon D50!!!

After much debate - Nikon/Canon - I decided on the Nikon D50 only after I picked up the Rebel XT and almost dropped the damn thing - due to it's awkward smallness!

I bought my camera through DGRIN from Anton who shipped it to me in the Westcoast of Canada all the way from Boston!

My one and only lens, which I bought brand spanking new, is the 50mm 1.8

I must admitt - I was sweating bullets trying to put the lens on the first time. I dont' know why, but it was like holding a new born baby.:1drink

So, on my wife's birthday, I started up the new camera and took 200 shots in about 2 hours. I pressed buttons, I turned dials, I scrolled through menues...and I was in heaven.

Now as my fever grows, I need:
- a bag...prehaps a crumpler?
- a cleaning kit...easy enough.
- a macro attachement for my 50mm 1.8....I think that's the way to go.
- perhaps a zoom in the next little while...either a
...18-200 VR which is about a grand and impossible to get until at least the fall, or
...18-70 D70 kit lens.

In the mean time, I'm trying to figure out RAW using Elements 4.0. I'd rather be out shooting than on the computer, but from what I hear, I NEED TO KNOW RAW!!!

Nice, Ryan! I got the same camera on its way to my house right now. Also my first DSLR. I was on the fence about the Canon vs Nikon consumer DSLRs, but the Nikon won out big time. Much more affordable without sacrificing quality & it uses SD cards which I already have a fast 2GB one, so its really for people like us who are coming from P&S cameras. How do you like Elements for RAW?? Im using Nikon Capture for Macintosh, but dont really like the UI that much.

The jury is still out on using Elements to process RAW. I haven't really tried it yet...

And I dont' want to install Nikon Capture if I don't have to - even though I was told to use it for the RAW.

YEY more D50 owners

I got my D50 about a month ago and have taken over 1000 shots. I've used the Rebel XT before and like you said, it's tiny!

The only thing I don't like about Nikon is the the inescapable onset of NAS (nikon acquisition syndrome). I've already thought of 2 more lenses that I want (18-200 and sigma bigma).

Enjoy your camera and take a lot of pictures!

I was at my local BestBuy (Harrisburg, PA) last week and they had two of these babies. I played with it for awhile and liked it quite a bit. It would be a fun walk-around lens.

They had two D200's also.

Congrats on the new camera for you too.

I use PSE3 and ACR with my Oly E-300 files. I tried the free RSE, Oly Studio (similar to Nikon capture), free version of Silkypix and I like ACR the best. It's somewhat limited compared to the CS2 version (I don't know how) but with Elements it does everything I need it to do, plus it integrates nicely with the browser and editing portions of Elements.

One thing it won't do, is actions or batch processing.

...good for you. Enjoy it! Problem is, you'll only want more and more lenses...an upgraded camera body later....you're screwed! In a good way though. It's not a cheap hobby...I've learned that.

Congrats on the new camera. 11 Nikkor lenses later and I still lust after more glass!
I cannot say enough about the D70 kit lens (18-70mm). For the money, it is hard to beat this one for a solid walkaround. You can lust after the 18-200mm VR which is one hot lens right now. Hard for anyone to keep in stock. It may seem a bit big and heavy to you as an every day walkaround lens. Although you can't beat the range and quality of this with VR to boot! Unfortunately, hard to get and a bit pricey.

Yeah, I have been researching that Nikon 18-200mm VR lens you guys were telling me about. I WANT THAT LENS!! Everyone says its like the perfect lens & for most people, can be used like 99% of the time.

Too bad its $800 & on backorder everywhere. I would settle for the one that doesnt have the VR, but they say that feature is what makes the lens so special.

This is gonna be an expensive obsession.

Hello D50's
I got mine one week ago today. I bought body alone with the D70 kit lens (18-70). I also have an 80-200 f2.8 from my 6006 film camera - haven't used that lens yet, but may get out with it today. I was just about to load my Nikon Picture Project software (any feedback is welcome) and also have Adobe Elements 4.0 (not crazy about it yet - I used older version on a Windows machine, I'm using a G4 Mac now -- AHHHHH). I look forward to keeping up with the rest of you 50 owners.
