MPEG-1 limitations really hitting home now...

I recently purchased a HDV camcorder that records in 1920x1080, or 1080i. Unfortunately, MPEG1 at any resolution or bitrate just doesn't provide the quality I need! I know this has been brought up numerous times, but MPEG1 is especially limiting to me now.
This is not a technical limitation on Smugmug's part, the embedded player doesn't care what codec it uses to play the video. The only thing that needs to be changed is the limitation on the type of file can be uploaded... I'm not asking for an increase in the 16mb limit, with a better codec I can deal with 16mb. 25 seconds of 720p video at a 5k bitrate is better than nothing
