I did just a quick shadow/highlight (amount of shadow: 55) correction in LAB:
[Richards is much better anyways - removed mine]

    Hope this helps,
    Sebastian

PS: Here are two tutorials on how to use the shadow/highlight tool of PS: by Rutt and by David.

    How's this?

Just some simple lab curves with the sky masked out. The people can be made a lot brighter, but it started looking fake to me. Don't really know how much you want to push it.

    Cheers,
