Motorcycle racing shooting tips?

I'm taking my daughter to my brother's race this Sunday at Summit Point Raceway and hope to get some good pics of him with my 70-300 IS. It's probably going to be cloudy (says the Weather Channel). What settings am I shooting for to get wheelspin but sharpness while panning? In general, what are the best parts of the track - corner approach, mid-corner, or on the way out? This will be my first try using the Mode 2 IS on this lens. TIA.
