They have a very distinct flight - I've seen them around me several times, but never on the ground. Great capture! thumb.gif

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

thanks for the comments everyone, I was happy they turned out like they did, I had the camera on ISO 1600 so I thought they would be a disaster when I downloaded them.

You're very lucky to get some cool shot of this very beautiful bird. Where I life (Aruba) I will never see a woodpecker :(:

We see these guys often here in the mountains of SW Virginia, but it is very hard to get a good picture. A few weeks ago we had two sitting on the same tree in my yard. Had time to get out the tripod and the 70-300 Nikkor, but the pics still were nothing to brag about; yours are much better:

my wife is from West Virginia, actually she was the one that spotted him. I guess they are more populated around that part of the country. Here is a fresh hole I found today in my back yard, I hope they are hanging around. Nice shot!

Aren't they magnificent birds? They nest here, but I'd only caught fleeting glances until we moved to our current home. To my great delight we have a mating pair somewhere close by.

Thanks Saurora, I thought about removing that old stump from my yard, but now I think I will keep it if it attracts these guys.

I heard they were more common up north, I think it would be awsome to have a mating pair nearby.

Oh! Is that what they look like up close...
I've caught glimpses of these woodpeckers at my suet feeder. But now... this is more than a glimpse. I love being able to see what they would look like if I got close to them. I love the expressions on their faces. This is great!

I've been forwarding links to friends interested in woodpeckers. They are loving the pictures, too. My friends may not say how much they like this thread, though, so I thought I'd mention it.
