timeline and uploading issue

Timeline does not seem to be working for me.

Does it batch process at night? or is it updated as I upload the images?
Does it only include public galleries?

The date taken is in the EXIF of most (but not all) of my images.

I have added relevant screen shots on my page mpmcleod.smugmug.com (Timeline problem) showing that I have photos uploaded and the timeline page

Also I appear to have a problem with all of the uploaders I have tried telling me that they only accept JPEG files. All my files end in .jpg or .JPG Are there other characters that are not allowed? (my file names often have - and _ in them)
Do the uploaders actually check the header in the file? or just trust the file name?

It took four tries to upload these screen shots. Each time the uploader reported success but when I went to the gallery it said it was an empty gallery.

Thanks for any help anyone can give,
Mike

I may have answered my own questions.

Since uploading those two images timeline now works but only for those two images and not for all my private images.

Could someone verify this for me?

Is there a way to make it work for private photos as well?

Does timeline only consider pictures from 2006?

My uploaded images are pre-2006 but I just uploaded them today.

    Thanks again,
    Mike

Right, neither timeline, keywords or even popular photos work with private or password protected galleries

Thanks for the reply even though it is not what I wanted to hear.

Since I plan to use SM to archive photos it would be nice for me to be able to use date to organize them even the ones that I don't want the public to see. Any word from the SM people if they plan to allow date access for private galleries?

    Thanks Andy.

I had read that before I posted but I couldn't find where it indicated that it could only be used for public images. Did I simply miss it somewhere or is the public/ private difference in another page?

    1) what browser and system are you using?
    2) which uploader?
    3) are your files smaller than 8mb (power) 16mb (pro) and 48 megapixels total?

If it worked for private images, then people could get to your private images via url/date -- not good...

    I see.

Could I suggest to the programmers to create a second search for internal (e.g. private) searching?

If I understand you correctly, SM only provides "security through obscurity"?

If someone obtains a URL for a private pic then anyone can see it even though it is private? Does this apply to password protected images?

Is there a FAQ for securing one's images on SM?

Thanks for the help. The support is wonderful!

We provide for many levels of security.
Private albums are not shown on your homepage. A viewer needs the url to find it. If it's passworded too, they'll need that.

Please review this help section, and if you still have questions, we'll be happy to answer them.

    1) Windows XP & Linux (Redhat WS 4)
    Firefox 1.5.0.2

    2) "Other platforms", "Universal drag and drop" and also the "send to smugmug" utliity.

    3) yes.

Do you know if the files are examined by header or by file name alone?

Also does SM support B&W jpegs ?

It seems to work eventually but they all seem to have some problem with some of my files.

    thanks,

    thanks,

BW, Color, any valid jpg file. I'd like to know more of your workflow, this is unusual. Are you dumping the contents of a folder? Sometimes the hidden files (e.g. "thumbs.db") can cause these problems.

What I did was run a file search for all picture files with an extension .jpg Then I selected them all (1485 files) and dragged them onto the "green smuggy". It popped up the error (only allowed JPG files).

I have had much less problem using the "send to smugmug" if I take it slow (one folder at a time) and it keeps my filing intact (I create a gallery with the same name as the folder). So the immediate issue has been dealt with but I was just concerned.

I will keep playing around with it and let you know.

Thanks. It appears that for whole galleries I can make them both private and password protected but it doesn't seem possible for the pictures themselves (at least I haven't figured out how to...)

    try this photo
    http://mpmcleod.smugmug.com/photos/65490535-D.jpg

It is inside a private and password protected gallery but outsiders can still get to it.

Outside access is not due to cookies or anything like that as I have tested access from totally different computers.

Is there a way to protect the pictures from access by anyone but me?

If there is a way I think it should be added to that page.

If protecting a picture is not possible it would be a major feature to get implemented.

Again the service here at SM is WOW!

Could someone add that hint to the page above? Probably would help out other people.
