The 40 is big and heavy (and expensive) as it is. The 55 is for medium format or for some hu-normous lenses, IMO.... way overkill for most things dSLR.

Instead of several intermediate steps, I bought the good stuff right away, and its mounted upon a new Gitzo CF pod no less. I hope to still be using this in 30 years. And the complete rig is so lightweight that I have no qualms carrying it anywhere. That just might allow me to get out and shoot more places and more often.

Ric, if you're following all this... sorry... looks as if we've hijacked your hyperdrive thread completely.

I just figured out that the Hyperdrive HD80 is actually the same as the PD70X. Also, Hyperdrive promised they will ship you a HD80 if you order before may 8th. You can buy a PD70X for a little less from eastgear and have it soon.

I think I am going to flip my thinking about carrying DVD's and just buy a 100 gig pd70x.

The PD70X is less expensive now? Interesting. The PD70X was more expensive than the HD80 plus you had to pay for shipping the PD70X (which was like $22 for meeek7.gif whereas the HD80 had free shipping) when I bought my HD80 earlier this month. May want to double check all of that.

I just bought a 100 gig PD70x and 8 Powerex AA's (I'm replacing 8 of my 1800s with 2500's) plus Fed Ex Overnight, which is 1-2 days for $313 total.

The HD80 is $299. So its basically a wash I guess. Its just getting it a week or so sooner so I can use it in the field 3-4 times before we go to utah. If it really doesnt work well or that I like it, I can still get a CF to DVD burner the week before we go to utah or maybe buy David a silo of Taiyo Yuden and beg to use his there :)

So I got my 100 gig PD70X today. I ordered it from Eastgear and got here pretty quick. Came with 4 Sanyo 2500 MaH NiMH batteries, car charger, AC charger, and USB cable.

I charged it and have tested it. I have copied 1 4 gig card 4 times and it creates a folder for each card and the subfolders are direct copies of the CF card like it was a reader. I just copied 3.7 gigs with verification and it took 25minutes. Its around 12-15 without verifying but whats the point. I plug it into my USB port and its my H drive and works pretty well.

No Complaints. This weekend I will use it in the field with 2 4 gig cards so I will see how it does.

Yea I wanted it off my plate for the trip :) I still think the DVD burner is a good idea, I'm just not sure how to deal with issues with verifying discs if it happens so I went HD.

    "Trust, but verify!"
Ronald Reagan said that back in the 80's, and it's still true today.

Since I'm addicted to TV, I'm bringing along my big flatscreen.

Allow me to butt in here. I've had my PD70X since just after it came out & have used the heck out of it. This is probably one of the single best photographic accessorie I've ever purchased. It is a workhorse & just does its job with no fuss. The only issues I've ever had are forgetting to charge the batteries & not having a backup set of AAs with me, and I've run into the fragmentation issue a couple of times; this is easily solved in that I have the empty formatting-trigger file on an old 16MB CF card and am getting into the habit of formatting after verifying successful transfer of the file to my PC--kind of treat it like a big card in the camera.

My original purchase was through the Singapore dealer (eastgear) and went without a hitch--shipping time was exactly as advertised. I've also had dealings with the new US distributor (hyperdrive), also a trouble-free experience.

Finally, the HD80 is the exact same thing as the PD70X, the only difference being the sticker on the case.

Glad to hear your experiences with it. I have run 16 gigs through it now without a hitch mostly studio stuff. Tomorrow I am going to take it on a 5-6 mile hike and see how it holds up. I have 2 4 gig cards so filling them up, verifying to PD70X and using again should be fun.
