I figured you guys would appreciate this.
I worked a charity bass tournament this weekend. I was there to help register boats and sell tickets for a drawing to win a very nice trolling motor.
I left the house at 3AM and arrived at the lake at 4. That left me 45 minutes to relax. There was no one around except for 1 fisherman on the boat ramp putting his boat in the water. Other than that it was dead quiet. It was perfect for taking a few shots of the moon rising.
When the crew arrived for setup, I put the camera away to keep it from getting damaged. Once we set up the tables and settled in, I got the camera out to take photos of the event.
One of the Bass Pro's helping us set up brought his $50,000 bass boat. He came over and sat down to help. As he sat there he looked over and saw my camera. He was freaking out about how much he liked it. I had my D200 with battery grip, 28-200, and SB800. I showed it to him and he could not stop talking about it. Finally he settled down and commented on it probably cost as much as his boat did... Not hardly. I told him the market prices of each component and he seemed pleased.
All the while other guys were pulling up with their boats. Some were nice, some were simple john boats w/ 10HP motors. I could see him puff out his chest in pride at the guys looking at his boat.
For some reason we start talking photos again and he reaches into his bag and pulls out some simple P&S. He asked me what I thought of it. I told him that it was a nice camera it should do him well. He then made another comment on how nice my camera was. I thanked him again.
I noticed that there was a table full of guys registering to fish and my crew as well. They were all watching the exchange between the bass pro and I. I could not help myself. I looked right at him with the camera in my hands. He had just put his camera back in his bag when I looked at him and said "I guess this is a new example of penis envy for you". There was silence for a second. He started to smile and said "I guess your right". The guys all knew how proud he was of his boat and he knew it too. They all started laughing and he took it well. He even asked me to shoot some photos for his website. No harm done and I got a chance to help him out.
The good news is that we raised about $1,800 for our Relay for Life fund. All of the money will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Not bad for the first year doing this.
