Is there anyway to see who is linking my pictures?

So, I have noticed unusually high statistics for a few of my pictures. I suspect someone has included a reference to them in their web pages.

I know that for my main site (http://www.gouldhome.com/) I can download the web logs and see who is linking to the pictures posted on that site, by looking for referrer links that are not the same site.

Is here anyway with SmugMug to so something similar? Specifically, for some high traffic photos, I want to see a list of referrer links if they are not from other SmugMug pages.

    Yes.

    Install Google Analytics:
    http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/1092794

    Or Statcounter:
    http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/1092684

    wave.gif Hi Joel

that'll tell you what pages ppl are visiting, but wont help if they are linking stand alone images.

you could always do a google search on link:nickname.smugmug.com to see what sites are linking to you...but i havent found a way to narrow that down to an image yet.

    Maybe I misunderstand but ...
I might misunderstand, but I think that Google Analytics and Statcounter will only record details of people who visit my gallery pages. If they link directly to a photograph (with a link like "http://photo.gouldhome.com/photos/63652468-L.jpg" embeded in an img tag on their page) then my custom header and footer scripts will not run, so Google Analytics or Statcounter will not see the access.

Let me know if I misunderstand. Otherwise, my original query remains.

    Try this http://wholinkstome.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gouldhome.com%2F

I periodically check sites like Who Links to Me. You can get an idea of who is linking to your site using them. There are several others.

    But does it rcord jpgs?
My experience with the "who links to me" listings are that they do not index images. So they will tell me who links to a gallery or my home page, but not who links dircetly to a photograph.

    Has anyone found different?

Actually yes. That is the reason I posted it. I have found sites linking to my pictures using wholinkstome. That is why I posted it. But, you have to dig.

At first I was disturbed to find my photos linked on a foreign site. I could not read what the site was about. I finally figured out that it was an image indexing service very similar to google that was the culprit.

There are several more out there but I do not have them bookmarked. I will look to see if I still have an email that a friend sent to me that included a bunch of really cool tools and techniques for market intelligence. No promises that I can find it.

    kill the link
if I think someone has a link to a pic and, for whatever reason, I don't want it linked, I just "Make second copy" of the picture, then delete the "original". that will break the url link.

Any way to track where images are being linked?
Its the begining of the month, and I'm at 4500 views mwink.gif. Any way to see if the pictures are just being hyperlinked?

I was confused by some galleries getting massive amounts of hits, since they were just assignments for my newspaper, and not really linked to.

Then I found out using the critique gallery mode hooks up your gallery to the main http://www.smugmug.com/browse/ page. If you look, youll see that 4 of 5 galleries are mine, since I always send links to the galleries to my editor, who uses it as a backup.

So you might be getting some exposure and not know it

    Hi Joel

Of course that won't help if the visitors explictly block these tools. I have blocked Google Analytics at my firewall (at home) to prevent the horrible slowdown the script causes when browsing sites that use it. Others can do the same by using Firefox with the Adblock Plus extension and specify to block google-analytics.com. My browsing has become much faster (even on Dgrin) since I did that.

Also, you can block external linking in the customize gallery page.
However, this will not be possible if you are linking to them yourself from somewhere.
