Nice shots. That green guy looks close and nice and sharp. The second one is a little farther, but it shows how well those birds blend into their background. Very nice captures.
That first shot is Excellent. Very sharp. I know the feeling about not being able to get close enough for the shot you want. The little green herons are particularly shy.

It's hard for a 57 year old, 6'4", 225lb. guy to be stealthy. :pissed
I couldn't get close enough with the Hubble telescope!!!
That would get me (with a 20D) 600mm X 1.4 X 1.5 = 1,260mm (35mm equiv) which would be just about right for the distances I shoot from. 1,260mm of some of the finest glass money can buy.
I have shot through my buddies 400/4 DO + 1.4TC ($5500). After seeing what that lens can do with my camera, there is no way I'll ever buy anything less. When I can afford the best, I'll buy it. For now, I'll use what I have and deal with the quality hit. One thing I will not do is buy a good lens that's slow, or a long lens that's cheap (like the sigma 170-500).
My wife thinks I should be satisfied. She shudders when I'm reading popfoto or shutterbug. She knows what I'm thinking when she sees me looking at B&H. Gimme Gimme Gimme
For me it's champagne taste and beer budget. I'm not satisfied. I'm sick when the guy next to me is shooting with his 600/4. I want one.
$1500?
What's that gonna get you? Not much. 400 f/5.6L, that's about it. A great lens, but it's still only 400mm.
Well, I guess I'll have to settle for that. Now if I lived where you do....I might rethink my position. Seriously.

So I'll have to be content with bitching about it. :pissed
Isn't there a song: "Can't get under it, over it, etc.............?"""
Well, I can neither get close enough (most of the birds I have shown), nor can I get high enough (most of the birds I haven't shown such as "my" Osprey nest.
You got close in the first shot! I have a gazillion green heron shots, yeah 400 w 1.4 extender, that I took last weekend. I worked up one, now would trade the others.
We could do like with trading cards!
Anyone for a Little Green Heron? a tad close (but I have no little birds, would take one in trade, plus raptors, wood stork babies, etc.)
I think your plan re talking up the 500, then settling for the 400 is a good one, but don't forget the Tamron extender.
Oh come on Ric get creative:D AND once you get it figured out let me know ok? Nice shots
Well I could build a blind, or wash with scentless soap, or get up real early and do the Indian Crawl to the edge of the pond, or better yet get a snorkle.............

After just spending another $1500, that would go over real big with the dear wifeypoo!
Maybe I could talk up the 500 IS....and then reluctantly settle for the f/5.6 400.
Now that would be hard to hand hold
It's good to see the greenies returning. I haven't seen one yet but maybe this weekend.

I'd try it if it has IS.

Perhaps I'll just rely on luck.
Thanks, Jeff.
The super glue thing escapes me.
300mm.........therein lies my problem!
