I have been looking for my first Dslr for a few months now. I had read almost anything that has been written on both cameras & had my mind made up on the d50 based on price, but now as I finally have the money I find that the d70s is not that much more expensive than the d50. some things I have read seem to have the d50 edging out the d70s in certain areas & visa versa. I will be shooting sports, family gatherings & a yearly trip to Yosemite. based on that will either camera do or should I get the d70s to allow for growth in skills? Any thoughts & opinons are appreciated.
Thanks, Chris

I would go with the D70 Chris.

Here's an excellent site for reviews of Nikon equipment. There are excellent reviews of both the D70 and the D50 there. http://bythom.com/nikon.htm

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

You'll be happy with either Chris. I believe your next step, sometime down the road, would be either the D200 or D2x/D2h... if you choose to upgrade. But either the D50 or D70 are great learning tools.
