    Congrats!

I ordered an iPod last week, with a case. The case arrived 20 minutes before the shipping notification.

Then I ordered a 15" MacBook Pro, which I'm supposed to get tomorrow!

Jamoke, keep your ears open. I'm VERY interested to see if the whining has been fixed with the 17's. I really dont want to send mine in yet because there is still no "official" fix for the noise but it's started to hang when it's coming out of sleep mode quite frequently.

I thought they were giving out replacment batteries that solved the whining?

As for your wake from sleep problem, have you tried any of this?:
    Fixes

Check your version of Flash player Some readers made use of our recently published tutorial "An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports", inspecting their Safari crash (~user/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Safari.crash.log) reports to look for a component implicated in these unexpected quits.

In many cases, users found that Adobe Flash Player (formerly from Macromedia) plug-in to be the cause.

    MacFixIt reader William Kucharski writes:

"I looked in my Safari crash logs and found the same issue each time - a NULL pointer dereference from the Macromedia Flash plugin.

"I went to the Adobe Web Site, clicked the 'Get Macromedia Flash Player' button and downloaded and installed the latest version of Flash Player (8.0 r24.)

"I haven't had a crash on wake in Safari since."

As we previously noted, Adobe released a beta version of Flash Player 8.5, which may be causing the problems. Intel-based Macs require version 8.0r27 which is available as a standalone download, while users of other Macs should use the standard download link for Flash player rather than the beta release if experiencing this issue.

Clear caches Some users have been able to solve this issue in Safari and other browsers by using a utility like Cocktail to clear Internet caches.

    One reader writes:

"I too had this problem. Repeatedly. Finally, I ran Cocktail to clean internet caches and all is well."

Delete Safari .plist file The tried and true workaround of deleting .plist files has proved successful in this case.

Try deleting the com.apple.Safari.plist (for Safari) or org.mozilla.firefox.plist (for Firefox) from ~/Library/Preferences (the tilde [~] represents your home user directory) then re-launching your browser.

from what i understand the battery replacement isnt for the whining problem..it's for battery problems.

wasnt aware of the flash thing. i'll give it a try but it happens even when i dont have any browsers open. ne_nau.gif

I read through the switch to mac link in your delicious, Mike, and it seems to be mostly good advice.

I've heard that you shouldn't run in an admin account, but then again, I've never had a problem with it. Perhaps when I set up my new Macbook, I'll do that...

But what I really wanted to say is that they mention Quicksilver, and I wanted to give a shout out to LaunchBar. I love it. Similar in function, I think, probably you'd choose one or the other. I've been using LaunchBar for years.

you have to run in admin mode if you want to run Office. I set up all the accounts on my MBP to be non-admin and then tried to run the trial version of office that was installed. no-go. need to have administrative privliges to run. not sure if this is true with the full version or not as i uninstalled it.

No whining. I thought I heard it for a second, but then I realized my Dell was reading from a CD.... the thing is silent!!
I'll keep you posted though BWG.

I actually ordered it last wednesday direct from their warehouse. They told me it would only take 5-7 days instead of the typical 10-17. It's supposed to ship on Wednesday. And apple still says that's the case. But the warehouse guys told me that because I ordered it there, they just had to put it in the mail, because they have tons that are sitting there from canceled orders, or the ones waiting to go to the store locations. I'm honestly not sure how I got connected to them. I called their ordering number, and somebody forwarded me to the warehouse, where I started talking to the guy, and he said I could order it there, and it would get there super fast.

Might be worth it to check it out - Give Apple a call and ask a question for their warehouse department (When will the store locations be recieving the new Macbooks), and then ask the warehousing people if you can order from them.

I believe that depends on where you install it. If you do not have an admin account you can only read the Applications folder, not write to it. You could install Office in an Applications folder in your User folder. When you make an Applications folder there, OSX will make the icon like the one in your root directory Applications folder. Don't move any Apple software there, it expects to be where it is, and software update will b0rk if you move them. But most if not all apps that you install yourself can go in your user folder. It won't be available to other users, however.

The other alternative would be to change the permissions on the Applications folder to allow other users to read/write.

Point being that any app that is installed in a way that requires the user to be able to write to the folder needs to be in a place where the user has read/write. Applications folder for a non-admin is not such a place, unless you change something.

So the same logic would apply to CS2.
