I'm going to the Houston Grand Prix this weekend with some friends, and trying to decide if I lug the 300/2.8 around, which would mean having it with me all day, including in the reserved seats. Or just take the 70-200 and maybe an extender. Sometimes you just wanna use your best gear, even if its a pain.

I'm wondering, at a street race like this, if even spectators can get close enough to the track to not require a long lens? We're sitting in turn 4, near the top.

I don't know about racing, but at most sporting events they don't allow telephoto lenses. (Afraid you might make some money and not give them a cut!)

A 'true' photog always chooses quality over pain.

Oh man! :) And I've already checked and was told no restrictions on cameras. Course I didn't tell them what I plan to bring... :D

    I say go for it.
I went to the Reliant stadium for the motocross races last month with my D-50 and 55-200, got shots in the pits and in the stadium even hanging over the railing. I would say the same goes for the Grand prix races. thumb.gif

Bill, why are you asking? We know you want to :D

Admittedly, the 70-200 with extender would be a better option if you just
want the camera and one lens.

Maybe, but my dad used to have a great saying: "Any fool can be uncomfortable." I say make your life a little easier, use the converter.
