Another from Starved Rock, the others are in [thread=33976]Other Shots[/thread]. Critique is welcome, especially on composition. I really want to go back here in the winter when the waterfall freezes.

Thanks for looking

Wow! You were there at the right time. Great light. And silly old me thought it was always in the shade. What time of day was that, Nick?

    Nick.
I re-composed your picture with the rule of thirds but I could not improve it much more. ( http://www.lunacore.com/photoshop/tutorials/tut023.htm )
As a matter of fact the photo is very pleasant and nice.
    Difficult to compose.
May be you can try a larger take in the future ?

Thanks Thusie, although there actually was no direct light anywhere in the shot besides the trees at the very top. I took some creative license in this one.

Haha fooled you. There was no direct light, it was all in the shade. The exposure on the rock face and falls was 1.3 seconds. I think that you are right that the falls are always in the shade. I believe this was shot at about 4:30PM.

Antonio - thank you for the suggestion and the nice comment.

saurora - You are very kind. I'm not sure if I really know my stuff but it sure is fun learning.

Erich - Thank you but there really was no light on it, I just did some creative photoshopping on it. I'm glad you liked it.

    George - Thanks for looking

Marlof - Thanks but as I have already confessed the light is what I wanted to see, not what was actually there.

R Johns - Thank you for the praise, but David is correct. This was shot at Starved Rock in Illniois.

    Well done, Nick. nod.gif

I may go to Starved Rock in the near future. It's an easy trip for me. :D

Our family used to go there when I was a kid. (ancient history)

I meant to go there this past February and never made it. It's supposed to be an excellent place for Bald Eagles wintering over.

Thanks Ric. I've heard the same about the Eagles but I have not been there at prime viewing times. Your right about the easy trip, it only takes me about an hour 15 to get there.

Very nice, Nick. I think the compo is excellent. I'd be tempted to cheat and find ways to make the trees and sky at the top a bit darker, and maybe the water a bit lighter. But I understand the conditions are less than ideal. Sweet spot, tho.

Thanks Sid! The trees at the top were the only thing in the pic that were lit by the sun so I did two exposures. One for the trees and the other for the rock and falls. I wasn't sure if I should try to darken the trees more but I definitely see what you mean, I'll try it out and see what I think. Thanks for looking and the comment.

Now that's close. Not only is Warrenville a 10 minute bike ride from me, but I owned a building in Naperville that had Jim Belushi as a tenent. Not exactly 6 degrees of separation there.

So Ric, if you decide to run down to Starved Rock anytime soon, PM me and place a post in the Midwest Meetups thread, OK?
