Being naughty on the plane

Anyone who's flown lately has heard something like this: "Alright, we've decended below 10,000 feet, so shut off all those electronic gizmos or suffer horrible beatings!".

Or something.

But feeling defiant, I kept my camera on and, just before landing in Ontario, CA, I thought it wise to take a shot of the traffic conditions. I-15 northbound usually is backed up to I-10 during the evening rush hour, but the only thing backing up was the smog (pretty typical this time of year). I had to do some editing or else you wouldn't be able just barely make out the mountains to the north:

cool shot - little soft - I've shot through those windows before - hard to get a sharp shot.

I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.

I have to admit I've been naughty as well on a plane. thumb.gif Here's a shot coming into LA at night:

It's really grainy due to the high ISO and a little blurred from the motion and the slow shuter speed, but it's got a nice initial impact. thumb.gif

When you see the shots in your head as you land...most definitely. Except that they didn't care that I was taking pictures.

I once missed the ultimate shot. I was sitting in a seat a little forward of the wing and they had a light on their logo on the wing. As we came into a turn, the night sky below spinned. If I would've had a steady hand focused on the wing, the lights below would've looked like spinning stars with the company logo and wing in full focus. thumb.gif

Hey Forehead, I know where that is!:D Could you see Scandia amusement park? (a really small little place) I think it's on the other side, though.ne_nau.gif I love seeing shots from planes like that. I've recently loved flying, I used to be terrified of it. But the last trip I took I just sort of learned to enjoy it I guess.

Having a camera, decent weather and NOT a lot of turbulence does make for a more enjoyable flight.

My other Nikon (E5400) has one feature I'd like to try--time lapse photography--to make a movie of the passing scenery. However, two things can be limiting:

    1) the 30-second minimum interval (I wish it could be shorter)

    2) how to mount the camera on the window without upsetting the FAA!

    Northern Italy
I took this while en route to Italy for my honeymoon last June. I thought it was OK to use a camera in flight but the flight attendant got upset and gave me on of these: :nono The whole cabin saw it. So this was the only shot I got of some mountains in northern Italy as we flew into Rome.

Funny, but cameras, even digital cameras, are fine on the plane. Now whip out a video camera and thou shalt suffer the wrath!!!

Here are a couple from a wicked thunder storm as we lifted off out of Orlando, FL after our honeymoon back in June of 2004.

I still love my little Canon S1 IS Powershot. For a P&S, it's great!
