This is one of a series I took of this bird from the car at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada on Sunday. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to switch lenses and the pictures aren't as sharp as I would have liked. Still, I would like to know what kind of bird it is. I think it may be a red tailed hawk. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!!

Thanks, Jeff. I was surprised to see it just sitting there in the grass. Wish I had had my 70-200 lens on the camera instead of in the back seat where I couldn't reach it without getting out of the car. :cry Still glad to have seen the bird and to have gotten the shot.

That is just not fair Virginia :cry. I was there Sunday and didn't see any wildlife besides a couple chipmunks. Did you get to see the petroglyphs? We were running out of time to get me to the airport and didn't get to see them. Those are some nice shots using what you had. I would have been happy to see one.

    Hi Nick!

I'm sorry I missed you guys at Valley of Fire. I decided to go on a whim and was glad I did. I thought seriously about heading out to Mouse's Tank and the petroglyphs, but I was low on gas and alone so I decided not to do it. (Most of my time there I didn't see another car or person.) The hawk was near Arch Rock just sitting in a little field by the side of the road. He landed just as I drove up then just stood there. Neat for me, for sure! I've never been that close to a hawk before. Oh, and I didn't see any chipmunks. So I guess we are sort of even. rolleyes1.gif

Great meeting you and everyone else. I have nothing but wonderful memories of the trip along with some well-earned aches and pains and 1350 photos to sort through. What more could a person ask? :):
